Blogging, Other Math Blogs 2 Comments »

Several weeks ago I took some classes to the computer lab to comment on The Math Challenger blog. Today we are going to look at some other sites. You are to do the following tasks in the order I give them:

  1. Read my post on Fractions, Decimal, and Percents. Read the comments as well. They were left by students from Mr. Harbeck’s class in Canada.
  2. Mr. H’s classes have been blogging for a while. Look at their posts and leave a comment here telling me if you would like to be doing this in my class. You may also leave a positive comment for one of them.
  3. Mr. H. and I worked together on a wiki a few weeks ago about Effective Math Videos. Look at it to get an idea about what a wiki is. Most of the videos we used are blocked at school, but you can see how the wiki is laid out.
  4. Mr. H. and I are planning to have our students (that means you!) work together on a wiki in January or February. I have started a wiki for our class, and I would like for you to go “play” there a little bit now. Follow the instructions at the top of the page.
  5. Read the Bonus Points #1 post on The Math Challenger site and solve the puzzle. Leave your answer on their post as a comment.

Third period Pre-Algebra went to the computer lab on Friday and entered the world of Web 2.0 at school!  They behaved beautifully, they stayed on-task, and they were enthusiastic about what we were doing.  They followed the instructions in the post below and introduced themselves, played a brainteaser, and tried Equation Blasters to practice solving equations.  Mrs. Wright’s students were also blogging that day, and she has already posted some more puzzles for us to solve.  Students do not have to wait until we return to the computer lab to reply to the new posts.  You can access the blog from home, and students who are not in 3rd period are welcome to participate as well.    We have exciting things planned for the future, so stayed tuned!

Hello, Math Challengers!

Algebra, Blogging 13 Comments »

We are beginning a new project with Mrs. Wright’s math classes from Challenger Middle School in Huntsville. We will be blogging together this year. We are looking forward to making new friends and learning more about mathematics in the process of blogging.

Please remember to follow all of the guidelines that we discussed.
Head on over to The Math Challenger and leave a comment on the welcome post, Your Choice, and Let’s Meet Mrs. Simpson.

Check out Equation Buster. It is a great game for illustrating the properties of equality!  This page lists other links to equation-solving activities that you might enjoy.

Tell me, how do you like what we did today?
